Where to live in Freiburg?
Students participating in exchange programmes can usually apply for a room at one of the dormitories via the respective mobility online portal. Anyone who is not coming through an exchange programme or coming to Freiburg as a free mover must find accommodation themselves: Either by applying directly for a room in dormitory, or by searching independently on the free housing market.
Freiburg is a very popular destination for students. This means that each semester, particularly in the winter semester, there is a significant shortage of housing. So it’s important to stay persistent!

The Studierendenwerk Freiburg (SWFR) offers rooms in various student residences. Applications can be submitted online and are accepted up to six months in advance – so if you are interested, apply as early as possible!

Private accommodations
The Studierendenwerk offers an Accomodation Service for finding a room on the free housing market.
In addition, Housing For Help is a Student Services programme that brings together students looking for a room and landlords who are looking for help in the household in housing partnerships.
The options for searching for private accommodation in Freiburg include small apartments as well as shared apartments or rooms within the landlord’s apartment with shared bathroom and kitchen spaces. The shared apartments (WGs) are often mixed, meaning that men and women live in one apartment and the works in the household have to be done mutually.
Besides popular websites like wg-gesucht.de or wohnverdient.de, regional magazines and free newspapers for various parts of town have a classified advertisements – it’s worth it to take a look in them or even publish your own ad.
