Having health insurance is mandatory for all students.
Health insurance
You must have valid health insurance before you enrol. There are two options: public (statutory) and private insurance. We strongly recommend the student rate of a public insurance – it meets all legal requirements and is accepted by the immigration office. Private plans may be cheaper, but they often lack the required coverage and may be rejected by authorities. Keep in mind that once you choose a private insurance, you cannot switch to public insurance later in your studies.
Mini-Checklist „Health Insurance“:
- No matter if you want to take out private or statutory health insurance: contact a German public health insurance
(providers in Freiburg) - Take out student health insurance
- OR get an exemption from compulsory insurance if you are:
- EU, EEA & UK citizen (plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland) who hold a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
- Student with private insurance in your home country
- DAAD scholarship holder insured through the DAAD
→ The health insurance provider will send the electronic notification directly to the University of Freiburg for your enrolment.
