Sample Problems – What is Bioenergy?

The use of biomass for energy generation is as old as human civilization and has a longer tradition than the use of any kind of fossil fuel. Today biomass is the most flexible renewable resource for several alternative energy uses: heat, power, and fuel.

University of Freiburg forest utilization researchers have been studying biomass use for decades, and material biomass use can often be combined with the production of a secondary energy carrier. This led to increasing activities on biomass allocation and biomass characterization for different energy use alternatives, biomass transportation, and finally analysis of biomass conversion processes, mainly combustion processes.

The research in this area includes biomass-for-energy supply chains studies on the energy input–output ratio as well as on carbon balance (life cycle assessment, LCA).
