Very broadly speaking, literary and cultural studies deal with the way texts create culturally relevant meanings. The concept of the ‘text’ is here used in a very broad definition, including verbal as well as visual sign systems and both fictional as well as factual communications. The following sections will explore these connections between texts and cultural meanings in three steps.

First, we will look at the impact the use of language has on interpretations of the world. Then, we will explore the role of perspective. And finally, we will consider the embeddedness of texts in their literary and cultural contexts.
