Core Program – Question 2 of 2

So, if a prospective LAS student tells her parents “I want to study LAS”, a possible interpretation by somebody witnessing the conversation could be:

  • factual information: “that is my study plan”
  • relationship: “your opinion about my future plans matters a lot to me”
  • self-revelation: “I am a clever and ambitious person with broad interests”
  • appeal: “please support my decision”

The parents might hear this slightly differently:

  • factual information: “that is my study plan”
  • relationship: “I need to get your agreement”
  • self-revelation: “job prospects are not my primary motivation”
  • appeal: “give me money”

An analysis like the one given here can then, for example, be used to clarify misunderstandings between the parties involved.

Please ask the following question:

What do you think of the model and its application? Which of the following statements apply?
